Beauty from Wendell and Mary!

Message from Wendell and Mary:

Winter is always fun, in many different ways here in Chaffee County, but there is nothing like seeing the first signs of spring. 

While hiking near Raspberry Gulch, I spotted a blooming Pin Cushion cactus, a Pasqueflower popping out on the forest floor, and the Pronghorn coming back to the higher elevations. 

This is a time of natural rebirth. 

I hope someday we too can have a rebirth and get back to hiking together.

Virtual HIke: Trout Creek Chert Quarry

Deb and I headed off for a short hike (3.5 miles RT, 400' vert) to the Trout Creek Chert Quarry. This quarry is an important archaeological site, so if you visit, please treat the area with respect.  Here are a few pictures: I know, hard to read...sorry about that! Chert--especially from the Trout Creek quarry--was traded widely among native peoples as the source material for an array of stone tools including arrowheads. Above, Deb is holding "worked flakes" that were chipped off larger blocks to make tools.  Just FYI:  chert is  a hard, opaque rock composed of silica with an amorphous or microscopically fine-grained texture. At this quarry, it occurs in a fairly large deposit, but in other places, chert most often shows up as nodules of flint or jasper. Here, the chert is a tan-to-red color; in other places, chert can be almost any color from white to black. We were inspired by a group on Facebook named "View from my window" that asks people all over the world to post a photo taken from their home. Grass fire near Mesa Antero; out now.

Wendell and Mary went hiking in Browns Canyon National Monument this weekend. While eating lunch at one of the overlooks, they noticed plumes of smoke rising from the valley floor. They walked to a clearing with a better view and saw the smoke was from a grass fire east of 285 on CR270.  That is near the north entrance to Mesa Antero on the west side of 285 where they live.  They don't know how it started, but luckily it didn't grow into a major fire.
